5. It's curtains for them!

Updated: Jul 18

They call themselves shower curtain gardeners.

Every day, people from across the globe post photos of their creations on several Facebook groups, sharing their wisdom about where to buy supplies and giving installation advice and feedback.

The Facebook group I call home is dubbed Shower Curtain Gardeners (and Interiors Too!) The bracketed addition on the tail end of their moniker was a later addition when people like me started inquiring about indoor applications. With a whopping 163,000+ followers it may be the largest group on Facebook, but it's certainly not the only one that is devoted to this rather unconventional decorating technique.

When I first considered using a shower curtain as a backdrop, I had no idea it was so common, but I confess I did wonder if fairy dust was giving me illusions of grandeur. However, as I perused the group's past posts, I couldn't believe what many of them had managed to achieve with a very small investment. My mind was blown. Check out this before and after by Esther Young from Shower Curtain Gardeners (Interiors Too!).

And this one is one of my favourites, because it blends reality into illusion.

Of course, not every project reaches this supreme level of masterful illusion! But that matters not, people seem to love their accomplishments anyway, and if it brings joy, that's really all that matters.

I learned so much about how to proceed with my own closet project, I was hooked. And that seems to be a fairly common thread, as I soon discovered. Over and over, I read about people being so obsessed after their first successful project, like in the vintage Lay's potato chip TV commercial, they couldn't stop at just one.

To be honest, "shower curtain" is a bit of a misnomer. While many folks do use the linens originally designed for bathroom use, there is also a very similar option that provides the same 3D images and designs without the holes along the top used for the hooks: the wall tapestry. These are generally made of the same water-resistant polyester fabric, but come in a wider variety of sizes. And if you can't find the image and/or the size you want, there are places that will create custom tapestries to your specifications if you send them a high resolution photo.

If you are wondering where you can find these dream makers, as I was, you needn't go further than your keyboard. Type "wall tapestry" or "3D shower curtain" into your search engine, and like fairy magic, you will be provided with all the sources you need, depending on the country you live in. Here in North America, I believe many shower curtain gardeners rely on the big 3: Amazon, Temu and AliExpress, where you can find a huge selection in a variety of themes. (Please note, I am not in any way endorsing these distributors, and yes, I do know that all three provide products manufactured in China. 😉) Because it is by far the most asked question on Shower Curtain Gardeners (Interiors Too!), followed closely by "What do you use to hang them up?", the group administrator has posted an always-changing list of vendors, accessible by clicking on  "Files" at the top of the home page.

After many hours perusing the Internet, comparing images, sizes and prices, I finally found the tapestry I wanted to adorn the longest wall of my Fairy Forest hideaway. Coming up next!

But first, here are a few more examples of shower curtain artistry, posted on Shower Curtain Gardeners (Interiors Too!)
